The Science of Her: Inclusive Storytelling

How might we empower Nike’s in-house designers to create more inclusive plus-size apparel using complex data?

Unlocking powerful data that empowers in-house designers to improve inclusive apparel with data visualization, storytelling and expedited workflow through a user-friendly digital experience.

The Challenge

Nike faced the challenge of enhancing apparel fit for plus-size bodies, despite having one of the most advanced athlete innovation centers. Designers lacked access to the precise scientific insights needed to adapt their designs effectively. The goal was to transform complex quantitative and qualitative data into intuitive, actionable metrics to guide and improve the design process.

Design Process

Collaborating with athlete researchers, we transformed the data into an internal intranet featuring visually engaging data visualizations, easily searchable metrics, and user-friendly storytelling formats. As the product designer, I focused on improving the user interface design, enhancing navigation and search functionality, and supporting CMS implementation.

Solution & Results

By empowering in-house designers with transformative data, we helped both apparel and footwear teams design better-fitting products for plus-size bodies, enhancing fit, function, and features. Nike continues to uphold its mantra, “If you have a body, you’re an athlete.”
